What It’s Really Like to Work With an Austin Branding Photographer
HOWDY, friends! If you've been searching for an Austin branding photographer and wondering what actually goes on once you decide to book, I've got the perfect person to walk you through it. My client and now dear friend, Kelli of Kelli Michelle Creative Co., sat in front of my camera this month for her own branding photoshoot. Instead of me telling you what a session with me looks like, I figured you'd rather hear it straight from someone who lived through it. So consider this your backstage pass. Grab your coffee, and let’s get into it!
Here's what we’re covering:
What to wear and how to prepare
How we picked the time and place to get the best light
What happens once the camera starts rolling
Why I always tell clients to bring their people, pets included, if they're part of the brand
How long sessions normally take
Turnaround time
Why I think every small business owner should invest in branding photos
A peek inside my new studio in Lockhart
Getting Ready: What to Wear and How to Prep
The truth is, most of the work happens before I ever pick up the camera. Kelli and I talked through her wardrobe ahead of time so everything felt true to her personal style. That conversation isn't just "what do you like to wear," it's about your brand colors, the location we're shooting in, and what actually looks good against your skin tone, hair, and eyes. A color that photographs beautifully in one spot can wash you out completely in another, so we plan around all of it before you ever get dressed. We also picked our shoot time around the light at her location, because good light will save you more than any outfit ever could. And somewhere in there, I reminded her to paint her nails.
Kelli doesn't paint her nails. Ever. So a few days before our shoot, she texted me a photo of her freshly painted nails just to give me a hard time about it, and she showed up on shoot day with them still perfectly intact. We still laugh about it. 🤣
In that same email exchange, Kelli told me she was nervous (she does not like being in the spotlight and is more of a behind the scenes kind of girl). I wrote back three words: "I got you." She's told me since that those three words did more to calm her nerves than anything else could have. That's not a line I use for effect. It's genuinely how I try to show up for clients before we even get to shoot day.
What Happens During a Branding Photoshoot
On shoot day, I take the lead on everything, and I mean everything. I set the mood with music, tell you exactly where to look, what to do with your hands, when to shift your weight, when to soften your face. We move through the space together, working through different spots and outfit changes as we go, and I'll show you shots on the back of the camera along the way so you can see exactly what we're building instead of just guessing until the gallery shows up. Kelli's told me since that she wouldn't have known what to do with herself if I hadn't been guiding every second of it, and honestly, that's exactly how it should feel. You don't need to know how to pose. That's my job, not yours.
Kelli also had a content creator with her, Claire of Content by Clarice, and it was the first time Claire and I had worked together. Within minutes we were in sync, trading off without stepping on each other, both of us keeping things moving and keeping Kelli comfortable. Being in front of the camera is hard for a lot of people, Kelli included, and having a team that's paying attention to you and to each other makes all the difference.
I'm also watching you the whole time, not just the shot. If your smile starts looking tired or your shoulders creep up toward your ears, I'll stop and have you breathe for a second. If a pose isn't landing or you're feeling stiff, we shake it out, reset, and try again, no big deal. If you're feeling shy in front of the camera, we find something to laugh about until you forget it's even there. A branding photoshoot should feel more like hanging out with a friend who happens to have a camera than standing in a corporate headshot line.
The Little Details That Make the Difference
While I'm working with you, I'm also working the whole scene around you. Kelli noticed it happening in real time, how many times I moved a plant, shifted a piece of furniture, or closed a door in the background before I ever took a shot. I'm also checking things like whether a cord is showing, whether the light through a window is about to blow out a corner of the frame, whether there's clutter sneaking into the edge of the shot, and whether the colors behind you are going to fight with what you're wearing instead of support it. None of that happens by accident. That's years of training my eye to see the whole frame, right down to what's sitting in the corner of it.
It's a small thing until you see the difference it makes. A photo where the background feels just as intentional as the subject reads as professional the moment someone looks at it. Kelli's told me that watching me work through all of it was part of what built her trust in the process, she could see the experience behind every adjustment, not just hear me talk about it. A great photo starts with you, but it doesn't stop there. It's built from a hundred tiny decisions, and that's exactly how it should be.
Bring Your People (and Your Pets)
Kelli's husband came along for the day, and so did their dog, Rook, a year and a half old golden retriever mix who is, by Kelli's own description, a total spaz. 😂 I loved having him there, and he kind of stole the show! He spent half the shoot with zero interest in sitting still, which is exactly what I expect from a young dog and exactly why I don't panic when it happens. Claire and I both worked with Rook that day, trading off between keeping him calm, catching his attention, and just letting him be himself in front of the camera. Between the two of us keeping him pointed in the right direction, we walked away with some of the best photos of him!
If you're planning to bring a pet to your own session, a few things help. Bring treats, bring a favorite toy, a water bowl, and plan on giving that part of the shoot its own chunk of time instead of squeezing it in at the end when everyone's tired. Patience goes a long way with an excited dog, and it's the exact same patience I bring to a nervous human. Neither one needs to perform. They just need someone willing to wait for the real moment instead of forcing a fake one.
This goes for people too, not just pets. If your husband, your business partner, your kids, or your whole team are part of your brand story, bring them along. Branding photos should look like your actual life, not a generic version of it. If it matters to your brand, it belongs in your session.
Session Length and Turnaround Time
We booked four hours for Kelli's session, with buffer time built right in. I told her ahead of time that most clients hit their limit around the three-hour mark, ready to be done, and sure enough, that's exactly when we wrapped. That buffer time isn't wasted, it covers outfit changes, a coffee break, a minute to calm your nerves, or just room to breathe in case a spot takes longer to work through than we planned. I'd always rather build in more time than we need and let you go early than watch you start to fade and keep shooting anyway.
Kelli didn't even have to wait to get home to see a glimpse of how the day turned out. I texted her a few sneak peeks that same evening, straight from my camera, just so she could see the day was everything she hoped for before the full gallery was even ready. Her fully edited gallery came nine days later. Turnaround shifts a little depending on the season and how many sessions I'm editing at once, but I always give clients a real timeline up front instead of a vague "soon." Before I send anything final, I check in on the editing style itself, whether you want it warmer, brighter, more true to color, and I make any changes you ask for. Your photos should be in alignment with what you envisioned, not like a preset I happen to love. You should feel good saying that out loud, and you should never feel like you have to settle for a gallery that doesn't.
Why an Austin Branding Photographer Makes the Whole Process Feel Easy
Here's what I think people underestimate when they're comparing photographers: the photos are only half the job. The other half is the experience of getting them. I've spent years photographing everyone from first-time small business owners to corporate teams to nonprofits around Austin, and my background before photography was in corporate and legal work, which taught me how to keep a room calm no matter what's happening in it. I've walked into shoots with tight timelines, nervous clients, and last-minute changes, and none of that rattles me. That's not luck, it's practice.
I've worked with buttoned-up executives who've never been photographed for anything other than a company directory, and I've worked with creatives who show up ready to try anything. Both of them need something different from me, and figuring out what that is within the first five minutes is part of the job. Some clients need me to fill the silence with conversation. Others need me to get quiet and let them settle in on their own. Reading that correctly is what makes the difference between a stiff photo and one that actually looks like you.
That's the part clients tell me they didn't expect. They come for the photos and they leave saying the day itself was fun. If you're nervous about being in front of a camera, that's exactly why you hire someone who's done this a thousand times and genuinely enjoys the people part as much as the photo part.
In Kelli's Words
★★★★★
"I was SO nervous about going into my branding shoot, but Lisa went above and beyond. She made the whole process easy from start to finish! She helped me plan everything from what to wear, to the best time of day for lighting, and even reminded me to get my nails painted (which was a hilarious but much welcomed reminder because I never paint my nails). On the day of the shoot, Lisa directed every detail, telling me exactly where to look, what to do with my hands, and when I needed to just breathe. She made sure I was comfortable, helped me with outfit selections, and even set the mood for the day with music. When my husband and crazy dog arrived to join in, she was so patient and kind, and our dog fell in love with her!
I am so grateful to Lisa for her professionalism, attention to detail, and energy that she brought to my branding shoot. For someone who does not like being in the spotlight, Lisa really helped me to just relax into it and feel way more comfortable. I love that she captured this season of life with me, and my new branding photos were the perfect addition to my new website. Thank you for everything, Lisa! You are the best!"

A Peek Inside My New Studio in Lockhart
I recently opened a studio at 103 Main Street, Unit 1, in Lockhart, and getting to invite people into that space has been one of my favorite parts of this year. Lockhart has this small town, everybody knows everybody feeling that I love, and the best part of opening these doors so far has been watching familiar, beloved faces walk right through them. There's something special about creating art for the people who make a community feel like home.
If you've been putting off updating your photos, here's my honest take: branding photos are one of the best investments you can make in your business. They're what shows up on your website, your social media, your email signature, everywhere a potential client forms their first impression of you before they've ever spoken to you. Bad or outdated photos, or worse, none at all, cost you trust before you even get the chance to earn it. Good ones do the opposite. They tell someone you're established, you take your work seriously, and you're exactly who they're looking for.
Whether you need updated headshots, branding photos, or just want to document a milestone, the studio is set up and ready for you. It's a flexible space, so we can keep things clean and minimal or bring in more texture and color depending on what your brand needs. And if Lockhart isn't already on your radar, it's worth the drive from Austin, it's become one of my favorite places to create.
Hours are Wednesday through Friday, 10am to 3pm, with Saturday and Sunday available by appointment. Come by, say hi, and let's create something together.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to a branding photoshoot?
Wear what feels comfortable and like you, not what you think a photographer or anyone else wants to see. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable or to be tugging on your clothes during your shoot. I always talk wardrobe through with clients ahead of time so we can plan colors and layers around your brand and your location. Bring a couple of backup options if you have them, just in case.
How long does a branding photography session take?
I typically book four hours to give us breathing room, but most sessions wrap in two to three. That buffer time is there so nobody feels rushed through outfit changes, touch-ups, or a location move.
What should I expect during an Austin branding photoshoot session?
Expect me to direct the whole thing! I'll guide your posing, your expressions, even where to put your hands, and I'll set a tone with music that keeps the energy easy instead of stiff. If something's not working, we stop and reset. No pressure, no guessing.
How fast will I get my branding photos back?
Turnaround depends on the season and the size of the gallery, but I like to give my clients their full galleries back in under two weeks. I'll always give you a timeline up front so you're not left wondering.
How do I prepare for a branding photoshoot?
Talk through your wardrobe ahead of time, trust your photographer's read on lighting and timing, and show up rested. And if someone tells you to paint your nails, do it, or don't. Either way, we'll laugh about it and get the shot. 😂
Can I bring my pet to my branding photoshoot?
Absolutely, if your pet is part of your brand or your everyday life, bring them along. I love working animals into a session, and a little patience goes a long way with an excited dog or a shy cat. Some of my favorite images come from clients who brought their whole crew, pets included.
How do I choose the right Austin branding photographer for my small business?
Look for someone whose work you actually love, and then pay attention to how they make you feel in the conversation before you ever book. Trust and comfort matter as much as talent. You're going to spend hours with this person, so it should feel easy from the start.
Ready to Book Your Own Branding Photoshoot?
If you've made it this far, you're probably already thinking about what your own branding session could look like. I'd love to help you figure that out. Whether it's headshots, a full brand refresh, or documenting a milestone in your business, I'm based in the Austin and Lockhart area and I travel well beyond it. Reach out through my website to start the conversation, and I'll walk you through everything from picking a date to talking through wardrobe, just like I did with Kelli. I've got you!
A Little About Me
I'm Lisa, a photographer based in Texas and available worldwide. I got my start photographing weddings in Philadelphia, in dimly lit churches, grand ballrooms, and historic downtown venues (GO BIRDS, always), before building my business here in Austin and Lockhart. These days I split my time between weddings, events, portraits, headshots, and branding and commercial work for businesses across Austin and beyond. Clients tell me they come back for the photos and stay for the experience. I bring an easygoing, problem-solving energy to every session, along with a background in corporate and legal work that taught me how to handle any personality with humor and grace. I can't wait to meet you.
