Dog Friendly Austin Weddings: What Couples Need to Know Before Including Their Dog
If you’re planning a dog friendly Austin wedding, you’re definitely not alone - and honestly, I completely understand why. Your dog isn’t just a pet. They’re part of your everyday life, your routines, your relationship…so of course you want them included on a day that means so much!
Over the years photographing weddings in Austin, I’ve seen dogs be such a sweet, meaningful part of the day. I’ve also seen moments where couples didn’t quite realize how much coordination it actually takes. So if you’re dreaming of having your dog there, I want to walk you through what that really looks like so it feels easy, not overwhelming.

Choosing a Venue That Truly Supports a Dog Friendly Austin Wedding
One of the first things I always encourage couples to do is look beyond “dogs allowed” and really understand what that means at each venue. Some Austin venues are incredibly welcoming to dogs and make it easy to include them naturally throughout the day. Others are a bit more limited…maybe they allow dogs for the ceremony but not the reception, or require them to stay leashed at all times.
That doesn’t mean it won’t work, it just means we plan differently.
When you’re touring or reaching out, it’s worth asking a few thoughtful questions and paying attention to how the venue responds. You’ll get a good sense pretty quickly of whether they’re excited about the idea or just tolerating it.
And from a photography perspective, spaces with open areas, shade, and a little room to move around tend to create a much more relaxed experience - for both you and your dog.
Let’s Talk About Austin Heat (Because It Matters More Than You Think)
If you’re getting married in Austin, the weather is something we have to take seriously, especially for your dog. Even on days that feel mild to us, it can still be a lot for them - particularly if they’re surrounded by people, wearing something unfamiliar, or expected to sit still during a ceremony.
I always recommend thinking through where your dog will be physically throughout the day. Are there shaded areas? Will they be on grass or hot pavement? How long are they expected to be outside?
It’s also worth planning ahead for hydration. Having water easily accessible for them throughout the day makes a big difference, and I’ve seen couples bring little frozen treats - like watermelon refreshers or dog-safe pupsicles - which can be such a simple way to help them cool down and stay comfortable.
Sometimes the best approach is simply keeping their time short and intentional. A calm appearance for the ceremony and a few portraits afterward can be perfect, without pushing them past their comfort zone.
Why Having a “Dog Person” Changes Everything
This is one of those things couples don’t always think about until the day arrives, and then it becomes very obvious.
🐾 You need someone whose only job is to take care of your dog.
Not someone who’s also trying to be in family photos. Not someone juggling conversations and responsibilities. Someone who can focus fully on your dog’s needs: walking them, holding the leash, making sure they stay hydrated, giving them breaks, and knowing when it’s time for them to head home.
Sometimes this is a trusted friend or family member, but there are also professional wedding pet attendants who do this for a living, and they can be such a game changer. They’ll handle transportation, stay with your dog throughout their time at the venue, and make sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes so you don’t have to think about it.
When that role is covered, everything feels easier. You’re not worrying about where your dog is or what they’re doing - you’re just enjoying the moment.
Getting Those Natural, Joyful Photos With Your Dog
The photos everyone loves, the ones that feel effortless and emotional, are usually the result of a little bit of quiet coordination behind the scenes. As an experienced Austin dog photographer, we don’t rush into anything. We ease your dog into the environment, give them a moment to settle, and then create space for those interactions to happen naturally.
Sometimes that means your dog is on a leash just out of frame. Other times, we’re able to create those leash-free moments everyone dreams about, but those usually work best when we’re intentional about it. Choosing a quieter spot, keeping distractions low, and having someone nearby ready to step in makes all the difference.
If your dog has a solid “stay” or is especially attentive to you, we can lean into that. And if not, that’s completely okay too - we’ll work with their personality instead of against it. I’ll often guide you into movement (walking together, interacting naturally) so your dog stays engaged with you rather than everything happening around them.
And sometimes, the magic is in the in-between moments…the way they look at you, the way you reach for them, the way they just exist beside you.
The goal is always the same: photos that feel like you, not forced or chaotic. And I’ll guide you through all of that so you never feel like you have to figure it out on your own.
Including Your Dog in Your Engagement Photos
If you’re on the fence about having your dog at your wedding, your engagement session is honestly the perfect place to start.
It’s a much more relaxed environment…no timeline pressure, no big crowd, no expectations - and it gives you a chance to see how your dog responds to being part of a photo session.
I always recommend this to couples because it helps us learn a lot ahead of the wedding day. We get a feel for your dog’s personality, what holds their attention, and what actually works when it comes to photos. Some dogs love it and settle in right away, while others need a little more movement or breaks, and that’s all really helpful to know in advance.
It also takes the pressure off your wedding day. You already have beautiful photos with your dog, so anything we capture during the wedding feels like a bonus instead of something you’re relying on.
And just like with weddings, we keep things simple. A favorite toy, a few treats, and choosing a location where your dog feels comfortable goes a long way. The goal is never to force perfect behavior, it’s to capture the connection you already have.
A Realistic Timeline for Your Dog on Your Wedding Day
One of the most helpful mindset shifts I can offer is this: your dog doesn’t need to be there all day to be part of your wedding.
In fact, most dogs are happiest when they’re included in a shorter, more intentional window - like the ceremony and a handful of portraits, before heading somewhere quiet and familiar.
✨ Weddings are busy. There’s a lot of energy, a lot of people, and a lot happening all at once. Even the calmest dogs can get overwhelmed after a while.
Giving them a meaningful role without expecting them to stay for hours tends to create the best experience for everyone involved.
Making It Feel Like You (Without Overcomplicating It)
Some of my favorite moments have been the simplest ones…a dog walking down the aisle, sitting quietly beside you during the ceremony, or weaving in between you both during portraits like they’ve always belonged there.
There’s something really special about those moments because they’re not staged or overly planned - they’re just a reflection of your real life together!
And that’s the part I always come back to: your wedding doesn’t need to revolve around your dog for them to be meaningfully included. It’s not about having them there every second of the day, it’s about choosing a few intentional moments where their presence actually adds to the experience, instead of creating stress around it.
Sometimes that looks like a short walk down the aisle and a few portraits after. Sometimes it’s being part of your getting ready time or those first quiet minutes after the ceremony. However it shows up, it should feel easy and natural, not like something you have to manage all day long.
When it’s done thoughtfully, including your dog adds so much personality and heart to your wedding in a way that feels completely your own. And when there’s a plan in place, you get to be fully present in it - soaking it all in instead of worrying about what’s happening behind the scenes.
